Trip to Washington Township, Warren County, Ohio 2003

The second goal of my trip to Kentucky and Ohio this summer was to see where the Wilkerson family settled in Ohio.  Since I had to fly in and out of the Cincinnati airport, going 30 miles northeast to Warren County was very easy.  The Wilkerson's had been early settlers in Kentucky having been at Boonesborough or Boone's Fort around 1780's.  Around 1803 James H. Wilkerson then moved his family where he received 200 acres of land and they were original settlers in Washington Township, Ohio.

One of the highlights of my trip was to visit the Wilkerson Cemetery.  I had heard that the Wilkerson Cemetery was overgrown with weeds and blackberry bushes and that it was very hard to find and see the stones.  What a great surprise.  In the last couple of years Emilie Stacy moved from New Mexico to Ohio to be close to her daughter and bought the top of Spring Hill which was the original Wilkerson homestead.  What a wonderful woman.  It is not everyone who would want to have a cemetery in their backyard next to their house.  What love and respect she has shown our family.  She has cleaned up the cemetery and keeps it mowed and edged.  We have so much to be thankful for that she decided to build her home on Spring Hill.

Below are pictures of Boones Fort just outside of Lexington, Kentucky, Warren County, Ohio and the Wilkerson Cemetery.
